Army kapa through to Matatini
For the first time a team from the New Zealand Defence Force will compete on the national stage for kapa haka honours.
Kairanga from the Linton Military Camp won the Rangitane Regional Kapa Haka competition in Palmerston North on the weekend.
Linton operations manager Selwyn Ponga-Davis says the camp is especially proud of the award Kairanga received for its waiata-a-ringa which was dedicated to New Zealand’s fallen service men and women.
Tu Te Mataora was the other team from the Rangitane rohe which will go on to Christchurch in March.
Another services’ team, Te Ope Katua, won a special award for the best use of traditional musical instruments.
It was also placed third for original composition, its exit and its haka, despite coming together to enter the competition only a month ago.
