Auckland Council underspends on Maori kaupapa

The chair of the Independent Maori Statutory Board says Maori kaupapa haven't got the support they deserve.
A new report from accounting firm KPMG has identified that of the $5 million allocated to support Maori outcomes in 2012, less than $1 million was spent.
The council's total capital spend was $1.3 billion.
David Taipari and fellow member John Tamihere are presenting the report today to the council's finance and performance committee.
Mr Taipari says he will be making a number of recommendations.
"We know that there are remedies here that can fix this and my concern would be if there was oppostion to those remedies. Now is the time to basically instruct for this to occur and with the clear road map that is being provided, there should be no reason this can't happen," he says.
Mr Taipari says for the first six months of the current financial year, less than 15 percent of the annual budget for Maori project has been spent.
