Kahungunu supports Ngai Tahu decision
Ngati Kahungunu is welcoming the decision by Ngai Tahu Group Holdings to walk away from the giant Ruataniwha dam scheme.
Chairperson Ngahiwi Tomoana says the presence of the south island tribe in the project to irrigate the central Hawkes Bay had been used by the Hawkes Bay Regional council to put pressure on Ngat Kahungunu which opposed the scheme on environmental grounds.
He says it's clear now the project does not stack up
" Oh we're pleased our whanaunga have pulled out because with our opposition and their support there are obvious tensions in our own whanaungatanga but in the economic reasons we are also glad because it would have been embarrasing for them to face a long term loss in our rohe" says Ngahiwi Tomoana
