Cynical budget sweetener


Labour’s Maori spokesperson says allocation for Maori in the budget were cynical sweeteners to make the Maori Party look good in election year.
Nanaia Mahuta says the $3 million a year extra for Maori radio still isn’t enough to ensure people in the sector are guaranteed adequate wages, and the $5 million for a Maori centre for research excellence is only there because the Maori Party took its eye off the ball when mainstream education funds were being allocated.
She says the Maori Party says it needs to be at the table to make a difference, but it has made no difference to the growing inequality under the John Key National government.
" If it had any great influence, certainly within this last term, every budget right up until election year should have demonstrated some clear gains in trying to tackle what we all know, 280,000 kids living in poverty" says Nanaia Mahuta
