Council needs to have more Maori involvement

Auckland’s Independent Maori Statutory Board wants the Auckland Council to be far more active in assessing the impact of its actions on Maori and involving iwi in decision-making.
The board has update its report on Issues of Significance to Maori in Tamaki Makaurau.
The document includes not just environmental concerns but offers a plan to improve Maori well being.
It also slates the council for its lack of support on issues like papakainga housing.
It says the council failed to include Maori in its economic development strategy, despite the imminent treaty settlements that will boost the amount of land and cash held by mana whenua and iwi.
