Saving focus for anti-smoke plan
MidCentral Health is targeting young Maori smokers in a pilot programme with Horowhenua College.
The Smoke or Save project will be a student-led operation where rangatahi set up a leadership group to run programmes and events aimed at promoting a smoke-free message, including a competition to design resources.
It’s backed by BNZ Levin, which is offering incentives if the students save the money they would otherwise spend on smoking.
An ASH survey has found the rate of active smokers among young Maori was still twice that of the general population.
