EPA looks at Tainui hub plan

The Environmental Protection Agency has started a month-long hearing into whether Tainui Group Holdings can start building a $3 billion freight hub on Hamilton’s eastern fringe.
TGH and its partner Chedworth Properties want to fast-track the process by applying for resource consents before Hamilton City Council completes its next district plan.
The project covers 500 hectares around Ruakura and includes commercial and housing developments.
It’s projected to create up to 12,000 jobs over the next 50 years.
TGH is counting on predictions that freight volumes between Auckland, Hamilton and Tauranga will double over the next 20 years.
The Waikato already accounts for a quarter of national freight movements.
