Burglar prince gets extra tikanga sentence

The 18-year-old son of the Maori king has been put on a tikanga-based restorative justice programme as he awaits sentencing on burglary charges.
Korotangi Paki, a student at the Toihoukura School of Maori Visual Art and Design in Gisborne, was arrested with three other men earlier in the year after breaking into a property and taking surfboards.
In the Auckland District Court yesterday, Judge David Harvey remanded him on bail until sentencing on July 3.
In addition to any court-imposed sentence, Paki and the three co-accused will undergo an eight-step mana restoration programme to win the trust and confidence of the king, the tribe and the victims.
