New contender emerges as Labour dithers

Another contender has emerged for the Labour nomination for Tamaki Makaurau.
The party had twice extended the deadline while it waited for Television New Zealand to report on whether potential candidate Shane Taurima, a former TVNZ staffer, had inappropriately mixed his political and professional activities.
When nominations finally closed at 5pm yesterday there were two names Mr Taurima and Will Flavell.
Mr Flavell heads the Maori department at Rutherford High School and stood successfully for a local board seat in last year’s local government election.
Before the selection process goes ahead Mr Taurima will need a waiver, as he was not a member of the Party for a year before nominations opened.
The drawn out process means Labour missed the chance to open its campaign before the Maori Party, which on the weekend picked south Auckland community leader Rangi McLean as its candidate.
