Maths teachers discount students

An education researcher has found maths teachers don’t count Maori students.
Hana Turner surveyed 15 teachers and 391 students at five Auckland secondary schools for her masters thesis on whether teachers had different expectations for their students based on their ethnicity.
She says most of the teachers had negative opinions about their Maori students, and blamed the students and their families for not being as competent as other ethnic groups.
Teachers' expectations were highest for Asian students, followed by Pakeha and Pasifika students.
Ms Turner, who is the mokopuna of Ngati Ranginui scholar Maharaia Winiata, says some of the teachers said that many Maori had criminal tendencies and would probably end up in jail.
