New course for Maori creative writers
Victoria University of Wellington’s International Institute of Modern Letters is to offer a creative writing course for Maori and Pasifika writers.
Te Hiringa A Tuhi will be taught by award-winning novelist and Victoria University creative writing graduate, Tina Makereti, from Tuwharetoa, Te Atiawa, Maniapoto, and Moriori.
Dr Makereti says the course will engage with the questions that arise when writing creatively and thinking about culture, and participants will try new forms and figure out how to produce good writing.
She says the course is for people interested in writing fiction, poetry or creative non- fiction informed by Maori or Pasifika viewpoints, cultures and origins, the process of colonisation, or questions of identity and belonging.
Institute director Damien Wilkins says he hopes Maori and Pasifika writers who haven’t previously considered studying creative writing will respond to the opportunity.
