Land sale not so mighty for Patu Harakeke

Ngatiwai hapu Patu Harakeke is trying to stop Mighty River Power from selling land at Ruakaka.
The company, which was the first of the state-owned power generators to shift to the mixed ownership model, says the land is surplus to its needs.
The hapu has been giving evidence to the Waitangi Tribunal about how its land was taken for electricity production.
It wants any surplus land to be returned as part of its treaty settlement.
Some of the land was sold 20 years ago to the Whangarei Horse Racing Club for a knock down price, and is now being slated for development an equine centre and a 350 home residential subdivision.
The Ngatiwai Trust Board says it’s backing Patu Harakeke’s claim and it wants further dialogue with Mighty River Power and ministers.
