Turei endorses Jones’ fisheries role
Greens co-leader Metiria Turei says the job slated for departing Labour MP Shane Jones is a job that needs doing.
Foreign Affairs Minister Muray McCully is creating an ambassador-level role responsible for working with Pacific nations on fisheries and other economic development issues.
Many commentators have seen it as fishy, but Ms Turei says many island nations are seeing their fisheries gouged by international fleets.
"I have talked with Pacific MPs about this and they have said they need some help, they don’t have the expertise to deal with these massive companies, and if Shane can do something and help to make that work I think that is really good. I think he could have done some awesome stuff in politics but I think he can do some awesome stuff over there as well," she says.
Metiria Turei says Shane Jones was on old school politician who may have found it hard to handle 21st century politicians like the Greens.
Meanwhile, Labour president Moira Coatsworth says despite Shane Jones’s departure, the party is the strongest it has been for years.
She says membership is up, and the party was finding new candidates in areas it previously struggled to get representation in.
