Iwi protests Tuhoe settlement
Bay of Plenty iwi Te Upokorehe yesterday held a protest at Ohope to protest their inclusion in the Tuhoe settlement.
The Maori Affairs select committee will today release its report on submissions on the Tuhoe Settlement Bill.
Kaumatua Wallace Aramoana says yesterday’s protest was at Maraetotara, which is a site that is significant to Te Upokorehe, Tuhoe and Te Whakatohea.
He says the iwi is separate from Tuhoe, and the settlement covers land that is not in Tuhoe’s traditional rohe.
He says if the bill goes through his people will become ghosts in their own region.
