Ngatiwai develops digital texts

Ngatiwai is encouraging its rangatahi to help put the Northland iwi’s stories into a digital format.
Joeann Waata from Ngatiwai Education says the aim is to get resources that can be tailored for a range of age groups and also will be accessible to iwi members outside the rohe.
She says four high school students are working with kaumatua George Martin and production company Kiwa Digital on the project.
"It’s part and parcel of an NCEA credit so the NCEA credits are attached to this initiative and our students have been involved in a series of workshops that they have been taught how to put together the stories and then they are going to learn how to digitalise it," Ms Waata says.
The first three digital stories, drawn from the recently-published book Nga Korero o Ngatiwai, were shown to kaumatua at Terenga Paraoa Marae in Whangarei last week.
