Scientific whaling sham exposed
The manager of Whale Watch Kaikoura, Kauahi Ngapora, is welcoming a ruling by the International Court of Justice that has stopped Japan’s whaling programme in the Southern Ocean.
The court upheld the argument made by Australia with backing from New Zealand that Japan's whale hunt off Antarctica was not scientific and so could not be justified by international whaling conventions.
Mr Ngapora says the Ngai Tahu-owned venture has long been opposed to the annual slaughter in its back yard.
"We’ve been a strong advocate for the value of whales alive and that the killing of whales is outdated and there is no need for it, particularly when we have commercial activities that are disguised with scientific research," he says.
Mr Ngapora says many of the whales that pass by Kaikoura would have been under threat from Japanese harpoons.
