Dairy farm wins water award

One of Ngai Tahu’s new farms has won an award from Environment Canterbury for its water quality.
The 380 ha Dairy Farm One near Oxford carries 1300 cows on former forestry land.
Judges said it was an impressive large-scale dairy conversion with a clearly developed strategy and the impressive use of technology for monitoring.
This includes the installation of 40 lysimeter barrels, which contain cross sections of soil which can be analysed for nutrient leaching.
Ngai Tahu Farming general manager Andrew Clayton says the farm was developed in close collaboration with local runanga and Lincoln University, one of Ngai Tahu’s partners in the Whenua Kura programme to train Maori for careers in agriculture.
