Applications open for Hellaby scholars

The call has gone out for applications to one of the largest putea for Maori scholars with a scientific bent.
The Rose Hellaby Maori Education Fund contributes about $130,000 a year to more than 112 Maori students.
They include two postgraduate scholarships paying $30,000 a year for outstanding Maori students undertaking Masters, PhD or other postgraduate study in engineering, mathematics, science, technology or medicine.
They also need to show they are eager to provide leadership to Maori in their given field and benefit Maori generally.
There are 30 awards of $1000 for Maori undergraduates studying in the scientific, mathematical or technical fields, and 80 secondary school scholarships for Year 9 students.
The trust, which is administered by the Guardian Trust and funds distributed by the Maori Education Trust, has paid out more than $3 million since it was established in 1969 by the descendant of the Auckland-based meat dynasty.
Applications close March 28.
