Raukawa treaty settlement passed
South Waikato iwi Ngati Raukawa was in force at Parliament this morning to hear the third reading of their treaty settlement bill.
The settlement includes an agreed historical account, Crown acknowledgments and apology and commercial redress totalling $50 million.
This includes the value of the 2008 Central North Island Forestry Settlement.
Culturally significant sites along the Waikato River and in other areas will be returned and the commercial relationship between Raukawa and Mighty River Power strengthened.
Two bills were read a second time in the special sitting.
The Nga Manawa Whenua o Tamaki Makaurau Collective Redress Bill, which will return ownership of 14 Auckland volcanic cones to an iwi collective, was sent to the committee stage.
The Nga Punawai o Te Tokotoru Claims Settlement Bill covering settlements with three Te Arawa iwi, Ngati Rangiwewehi, Ngati Rangiteaorere and Tapuika, will go straight to its third reading.
