Second region forms Maori cricket team

Attempts to develop Maori cricket may be starting with a newly-formed Wellington side picking up a challenge to take on the Northern Districts Maori team later this month.
The Twenty20 doubleheader will be played at Taupo’s Owen Delaney Park on 23 March.
Northern Maori coach Graeme Stewart says he has been working with the country’s first-class cricket associations and New Zealand Cricket to develop a Maori conference.
He says it will help to retain more talented young Maori sportsmen in cricket.
In a warm-up, Northern Maori will play a Twenty20 match against the MoleMap NZCPA Masters at Rotorua’s Smallbone Park this Sunday.
Former Northern Knights batsman Tamati Clark will be back in the team after a lenmgthy recovey from a shoulder injury, and Thomas Hayes and Joshua Bates, who each scored centuries for Poverty Bay this season, will also strengthen line line-up.
