Tuhoe opens
Meanwhile, Tuhoe opens its new headquarters tomorrow in what is being called New Zealand’s first 100 percent living building.
Te Wharehou o Tuhoe was designed by Ivan Mercep of Jasmax and includes locally sourced timber and hand made bricks.
Power comes from solar panels covering the roof and water is captured for drinking, cleaning and fire sprinklers.
As well as offices for Tuhoe Te Uru Taumata, it includes organic gardens to supply the cafeteria, an exhibition space for artists, taonga and archival storage, a library and community rooms.
The amphitheatre-styled entranceway will also act as a venue for hui and the biennial Tuhoe festival.
There will be a dawn opening and then a day of demonstrations, speeches and celebrations.
