Tuhoronuku prepares for vote
Te Rōpū o Tuhoronuku is pushing ahead with hui informing Ngapuhi people of the next steps in negotiating a settlement to historic treaty claims.
There is some opposition coming from some hapu, but Ngapuhi kuia and Tuhoronuku member Titewhai Harawira says the iwi is ready to talk with the Crown about settling.
A hui at Kaikohe last night drew 80 people, and there are hui today at Waimamaku and Matauri Bay.
Tuhoronuku facilitator Kipa Munro says the hui are to tell people how they can participate in the process.
"All of the members of Tuhoronuku have stepped down, so there is a re-election and re-appointment process we are going through so that is the korero we are putting on the table at the moment, how do people participate in that. Our hapu need to identify who that person is that is going to represent them in that process," he says.
Mr Munro says after the five hui in Tai Tokerau, Tuhoronuku will travel to other centres around the country and in Australia, finishing with hui in Tamaki Makaurau.
