Single Marlborough Maori health service mooted
Nelson Marlborough District Health Board is pushing for a one stop shop to deliver services to Maori in Marlborough.
Harold Wereta, the board’s Maori heath and whanau ora general manager, says it will contract with one provider for whanau ora, including children’s health and kaupapa Maori mental health services.
The service will include Maori community nursing teams, health social workers and community health workers to liaise with whanau.
The DHB has been picking up the pieces after the 2012 collapse of the region’s largest Maori health provider, Te Rapuora.
Te Tai Tonga MP Rino Tirikatene has expressed concern that the plan, which reallocates existing funding, will spell the end for some of the smaller Maori health providers who are doing a good job.
