Money woes barrier to profession

New research from the New Zealand Psychological Society and the College of Clinical Psychologists has found students are less likely to continue into postgraduate study without an allowance.
It found the government’s cuts to postgraduate student allowances were making 75 percent of psychology undergraduates, including 85 percent of Maori, question whether they can go on to do the postgraduate study needed to complete their professional registration.
Greens education spokesperson Holly Walker says New Zealand is already short of psychologists, and in particular of Maori psychologists.
She says it’s dishonest for National to talk about making New Zealand a more innovative, internationally competitive nation when it has stripped away support for the people who would do just that.
