Te Kawerau a Maki to get day in sun
Auckland Mayor Len Brown says the Te Kawerau a Maki settlement to be signed on Saturday will be a significant milestone for the city.
The iwi is one of 19 with a stake in the super city, and Mr Brown says he has excellent working relationships with all of them.
He says some have been overlooked in the past, but the settlement will give the Waitakere-based iwi a bigger profile.
"Many Aucklanders probably wouldn’t be aware of the tribe, which would reflect on the wider Ngati Whatua, but their day in the sun has finally arrived and great to see the finalisation of the treaty coming through. Something like $6.5 million is a part of their settlement, the option to buy 85 percent of the Riverhead Forest and also the option to build a new marae out there so very exciting," Mr Brown says.
