Art in Oceania wins top book prize
A book which puts Maori and Pacific art into a wider context has won the prestigious Art Book Prize in London.
The prize, awarded annually to the best book on art or architecture published in English anywhere in the world, aims to do for the visual arts what the MAN Booker has done for the novel.
Art in Oceania: A New History, is a collaboration by a team of seven anthropologists, art historians and curators in New Zealand and the UK including Auckland University Associate Professor Deidre Brown, Auckland Museum curator Damian Skinner and Te Papa curator Sean Mallon.
Dr Brown says the award shows the authors were able to communicate the power, beauty and stories of the art of the region and ancestors to a much wider audience.
