Red meat industry looks for change

The Federation of Maori Authorities is urging Maori meat producers to have their say on restructuring New Zealand’s red meat industry.
Federated Farmers is putting forward a range of option for addressing cut throat competition in the sector which is squeezing margins for producers, one in five of whom are Maori.
It is pushing a model of co-opetition, where producers co-operate domestically and regionally to make the sector more competitive internationally.
Federated Farmers has already presented the options to the East Coast Red Meat Coalition, which includes more than a dozen of the largest Maori-owned and operated farms in the Tairawhiti region, and it prepared to make similar presentations to other regional groupings of Maori farmers.
