Brett Graham wins NY residency
Brett Graham has been awarded Creative New Zealand’s New York residency.
The Ngati Koroki Kahukura sculptor will spend four months at the International Studio and Curatorial Program researching his Generation 15 project about the tribes that once occupied the area.
Manhattan Island was acquired by Dutch settlers in 1626 for goods valued at $26.
Dr Graham says he’s excited by the programme and the chance to continue a dialogue with Native American artists that began with the Te Maori exhibition in 1984.
His work is held by national collections including Te Papa Tongarewa and he has taken part in major international exhibitions such as the collateral programme of the 2007 Venice Biennale, the 2010 Biennale of Sydney and an International Indigenous Art survey at the National Gallery of Canada last
