Trades training aim of school
Maunga Taranaki Energy is holding information hui in the province this week on its plans to open to kura hourua aimed at 15 to 18 year olds.
Director Eddie Prime says they have been looking for a model that works better for Maori than private training establishments.
He says the partnership school will allow them to target young people who are keen on a trade career, as well as offering a second chance to rangatahi who may have dropped out of the school system.
"Our Maori tradesmen are the key. We’re driving this because we know our craft, we know how to talk to our rangatahi to get the best out of them, patipati, tell them off, give them awhi again, aroha ki te tangata, that is the whole purpose of our kaupapa," Mr Prime says.
Maunga Taranaki Energy will work with iwi health and social service group Tui Ora to ensure the students are supported in their study.
