Charter students blocked from classes

Education Minister Hekia Parata is disappointed Whangarei schools are refusing to back the region’s new charter schools.
Te Kura Hourua O Whangarei Terenga Paraoa opens on February 23, and it wants to send its 50 students to other schools for specialist classes.
But only Whangarei Boys High School is willing to take them.
Ms Parata says apart from that hiccup, she’s heartened by the progress at Northland two kura hourua.
"I congratulate Te Kura o Terenga Paraoa and of course Te Kura o Whangaruru, both of which have attracted the enrolment numbers that were expected in their contract, both of which have very good contracts to offer their students and whanau, and both of which are getting on with the job so I think our job is to support them and to wish them well with their students," she says.
The Education Ministry is trying to get Whangarei schools to sign a memorandum to establish a formal working relationship with the kura hourua.
