Ngati Ruanui opposes iron sand suck

Ngati Ruanui says it must oppose an application by Trans-Tasman Resources to mine iron sands along the South Taranaki coast because there are still too many uncertainties about the project.
Chief executive Debbie Ngarewa-Packer says the company has relied heavily on theoretical modeling, and the iwi considers the risk to the environment outweighs the benefits claimed.
She says it is concerned about the widespread movement of sand and the effects of the resulting smothering and sediment plume.
Mrs Ngarewa-Packer says the economic benefits are described in national terms, and there are no specific economic impact projections for the Taranaki region or the Ngati Ruanui takiwa.
