Northern challenge for Statoil
A hikoi leaves Cape Reinga tomorrow to protest oil exploration off the far north.
It’s likely to pick up supporters as it heads for Waitangi, including MPs Hone Harawira and Dave Clendon.
One former protester who won’t be on board is Labour’s Shane Jones, who wants Northland communities to listen with an open mind to what Norwegian oil company Statoil says it can deliver.
"Providing the technology is robust and the environmental laws have been complied with, I will not spend one ounce of my energy protesting oil and gas in the north, but it's up to the applicant to obey the laws and demonstrate they can generate value not only for themselves but jobs and income for our country and our northern community," he says.
