Baby bonus leading to better jobs
Manurewa MP Louisa Wall says Labour’s Best Start package is a step on the way to give all New Zealand children equal opportunity.
The policy unveiled by leader David Cunliffe in west Auckland yesterday includes a $60 a week payment in the first year of a baby’s life for families earning $150,000 or less, 26 weeks paid parental leave and five hours more subsidised early childhood education.
Ms Wall says Labour is concerned at growing inequality, and it’s determined to tackle it.
"Children need the resources so they can have a giood start, we get them into early childhood education and on a pathway to ensure that education is going to be an opportunity for all of our kids to identify what they enjoy, what they want to do, and to be able to get good productive well paid jobs," she says.
