Flags for prisons call
A group that pushed for the Maori flag to fly on the Auckland Harbour Bridge now wants it flown from all Maori focus units run by the Department of Corrections.
Te Ao Pritchard from Te Ata Tino Toa says since New Zealand First leader Winston Peters is opposed to both the flag and Maori focus units, it makes sense to fly it there.
He says flying the tino ranatiratanga flag will support the pride and tikanga in Maori culture that the units aim to share with inmates.
Mr Pritchard says Australia allows the Aboriginal flag to fly at schools and prisons, so it’s not a big deal to fly an alternative flag here.
