Ratana supporters remembered in kawe mate
Thousands of people from around the country have gathered at Ratana Pa near Whanganui to celebrate Saturday’s anniversary of the movement’s prophet and founder.
While most of the politicians attending will be welcomed tomorrow, Mana leader Hone Harawira arrived today with morehu from Tai Tokerau.
He says for him it’s not politics but showing respect to those in the movement, especially for those who have died over the past year.
"We’ve got kawe mate for Doc Wikiriwhi who everyone up there in Auckland knows, his kawe mate is today, as well as Tapihana Shelford from up the Kaipara and Raumati Para from up in Kaikohe and young Jesse Pene and a number of others. A lot of them have been really strong supporters of Mana, so I'm here to honor them and their support – not just for Mana – but for kaupapa Maori, and also to honor the memory of Ratana and the fight that he always put up for the Treaty," says Mr Harawira.
