Ngai Tahu rangatahi learn traditions
A group of Ngai Tahu rangatahi are this week exporting the historic Otakou Peninsula and learning food gathering practices and other traditions.
Organiser Paulette Tamati-Elliffe says the annual Manawa hou hikoi is a way to pass on tribal traditions and create a sense of identity among the next generation.
While some of the youngsters have existing links with whanau in the area, some may be from familes that haven't made the connection back for two or three generations.
"It's creating memories for them, positive memories of being with whanauka. Building those relationships and that sense of belonging and identity as they visit in each papakaika and get to know some of the people that keep the home fires burning as well of each rohe," says Paulette Tamati-Elliffe.
