Grammar hostel zoning in on results

A charity that uses a whangai model to get boys into a prestigious Auckland state school, wants to expand.
InZone Education Foundation gets parents of Maori and Pasifika students to sign over shared guardianship of their sons so they can live in zone for Auckland Grammar.
It has more than 50 boys living at the former Maori trades training hostel in Owens Rd, which it leases rent free from Ngati Whatua.
Chicago-born youth pastor Terrance Wallace started the foundation in 2010 in response to news reports on Maori and Pasifika educational under-achievement.
He says the combination of what the school has to offer and the support the boys get from the foundation and community has resulted in positive academic results.
Expansion plans include establishing a girls' hostel in zone for Epsom Girls Grammar School, and another for tertiary students.
Mr Wallace says the InZone model could be replicated in other areas, and not just ones with high decile or top academic schools.
