Treaty too hard to move

A high profile project to move the original Treaty of Waitangi documents to the National Library appears to have been quietly scrapped.
Labour’s associate arts, culture and heritage spokesperson Grant Robertson says the move was supposed to have been completed this year, but the Department of Internal Affairs had now put it on hold.
He says it’s more evidence that National's merger of Archives New Zealand into the department has been a complete failure.
He says ministers were advised last year that upgrading the existing purpose built Treaty room at Archives NZ would cost $1.9 million, but instead opted for a $6.7 million move to the library across the road.
Mr Robertson says the project is a mess and consultation with Maori has been inadequate.
Internal Affairs last week canned a project to create a digitial archive of government data after spending more than $7 million dollars.
