Taiwhenua backs dam project

A split has emerged among Maori in the Hawkes Bay about the controversial Ruataniwha water storage scheme.
Te Runanga o Ngati Kahunugunu Inc opposes the damming of the Tukituki River and its tributaries for irrigation and says tangata whenua were not properly consulted.
But Te Taiwhenua o Tamatea has told the board considering the consents for the scheme that its nine marae have customary authority over the scheme area and therefore are the appropriate people to consult.
Chair Roger Maaka says the Hawkes Bay Regional Council has addressed all its concerns, and the taiwhenua backs the scheme.
