Take this rope from my throat
A bill restoring the character, mana and reputation of Te Whakatohea chief Mokomoko has passed its third reading and now only awaits the Governor General’s signature to become law.
Mokomoko, was tried, convicted and executed in 1866 for his alleged role in the murder of Rev Carl Sylvius Volkner in Opotoki, and went to the grave protesting his innocence.
Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples says the Mokomoko whanau have fought for justice for decades.
He says in their actions they have honoured their tipuna and his last words, “Tangohia te taura i taku kaki, kia waiata au i taku waiata”, ‘take the rope from my throat so that I may sing my song’.
Dr Sharples also acknowledged the late Parekura Horomia and the Maori affairs select committee, who played a major role in getting the bill through.
