Rangatahi given taster of biology study

Waikato University wants to get more Maori and Pasifika students studying biology at tertiary level.
It’s hosting a summer school this week for 22 students from schools in Hamilton, Te Awamutu and the Waitomo area.
Kevin Eastwood, the Maori student achievement coordinator in the Faculty of Science & Engineering, says Te Huakirangi summer school aims to give them an interest in biology in a way that is appreciative of Maori and Pasifika world views.
The students are doing practical experiments, experiencing aspects of first, second and third year undergraduate science papers and also taking part in sporting activities, games, waiata, and trips to Maungatautari and Hamilton Zoo.
