Jones calls for resignation over forest deaths
Labour MP Shane Jones says National Minister Simon Bridges should step down over the appalling record of deaths and injuries in the forestry sector under his watch.
A 63-year-old Murupara father of four, David Beamsley, died in a tree-felling accident in the Kaingaroa forest on Tuesday.
He’s the eighth forestry worker to die on the job this year.
Mr Jones says when Opposition MPs recently tried to question Mr Bridges about what he was doing to address forestry deaths, they were told to “get a life.
"He should eat those words in utter shame. When you're talking about a regime to improve the prospects of all families having their fathers home at the end of the day, you don't tell the public or a politican as a proxy for the public to get a life. I suspect that John Keys going to leave him for awhile and this minister will be moved. I mean I believe he should be sacked but John Key has really got to put the interests of the workers above the ministers pride," says Shane Jones.
