Te Roroa reconciliation with Titford spouse

Members of Te Roroa have met with the former wife of Northland farmer Allan Titford in the spirit of reconciliation.
Titford was last week jailed for 24 years after being found guilty of 39 charges of violence, rape and arson.
His wife Susan Cochrane told the court he had burned down their home north of Dargaville in 1992 and blamed it on the iwi, whose claim included a waahi tapu on his farm.
Claimant Manos Nathan says was happy to meet Ms Cochrane this week and assure her of their compassion for her situation.
"She’s the victim here. She’s the one that endured this huge abuse down the years and under duress was compelled to do things which didn’t make it any easier for us, but that’s not the problem now. I think the issue now is getting her life back on the road and her children and I’m pleased that we were able to do that," he says.
Mr Nathan says Titford’s lies turned the community against the claim and caused great suffering to the elders.
