Horowhenua lake battle flares up

Lake Horowhenua kaitiaki Philip Taueki says he will fight a trespass notice barring him from the lake.
The notice was requested by Matt Sword, the chair of the Lake Horowhenua Trust, which represents the lake’s 1500 owners.
Mr Sword told a Maori Land Court hearing on Tuesday the trust acknowledges Mr Taueki’s concerns about the lake but it was worried about the methods he uses to clean it up.
Mr Taukei says the notice is illegal, and as one of the Muaupoko owners he has rights of access.
He was expecting a confrontation with police if they turn up to enforce the notice and an eviction notice against him.
Mr Taueki last week filed High Court proceedings against the Horowhenua District Council's attempt to restrospectively ratify an agreemnt signed 40 years ago by Lake Horowhenua trustees allowing the discharge of Levin's untreated stormwater into the lake.
He says it's an aatempt by the council to get around the nuisance proceedings he is running against it in the Maori Land Court.
