Hikoi against south Taranaki drilling

Ngati Haua Whanui from south Taranaki is planning a four day hikoi to protest the granting of consents for Tag Oil to drill a stone’s throw from Egmont National Park.
Hikoi organiser Missy Spooner says the Ngaruahine hapu is calling for support from iwi nationwide.
The hikoi will leave Parihaka on Sunday and go through Opunake, Otakeho and Manaia, finishing in Hawera on Wednesday.
Daisy Noble, the chair of Nga Hapu o Ngaruahine Iwi executive, says she met with Tag Oil last week and told them the iwi wanted a 5 kilometre buffer zone around the maunga.
Ngaruahine is still considering whether it will appeal the decision to the Environment Court.
Meanwhile, off the north Taranaki coast, the sailing boat Vega continues to circle the Anadarko drilling ship Noble Bob Douglas in an attempt to prevent it sinking an exploratory well in 1500 metres of water.
