Rangiriri a springboard to self determination for future generations

Thousands gathered by the Waikato river this morning to mark the 150th anniversary of the battle of Rangiriri.
What was the bloodiest battle of the New Zealand Wars, opened the Waikato river basin to colonial troops.
Waikato Tainui Chairperson Rahui Papa says it's important that the tribe keeps the memory of those days alive.
"We're looking at commemorating those ancestors that lost their lives, both Maori and pakeha. Commemorating those who were captured and incarcerated after the battle, as well as looking towards our tamariki and our mokopuna our next generations who will never forget the battle of Rangiriri but, who will use the battle of Rangiriri as a springboard in to self determination for the future " says Mr Papa
