Violence a problem for all

An ambassador for the White Ribbon Campaign says domestic violence is a problem that reaches everyone in society.
Takurua Tawera from White Ribbon's Maori arm, Te Ahi Kikoha, is riding his 1800cc Boulevard motorcycle around the North Island on the annual White Ribbon Ride to highlight the kaupapa.
The former gang member turned addiction therapist says the movement has evolved as the focus expanded from tackling perpetrators to supporting victims and providing good role models.
"We assumed that the issue was Maori. That was the perception that was out there because that was reflected through the media, but once we started going down the track we realised violence affected all cultures, all ethnicities, it didn’t discriminate against your social standing. We see violence occurring in all facets of society," Mr Tawera says.
