Sharples keen for iwi to take reo lead
Maori Affairs Minister Pita Sharples wants to see iwi taking more responsibility for revitalizing te reo Maori.
Dr Sharples presented the supreme award in the weekend’s Maori language awards.
He endorsed the new strategy being pursued by Te Reo Whiri I Te Reo Maori language commission to give more control to iwi.
"At the end of the day the hapu and the iwi have the ownership of the dialects and te reo Maori so somehow they’ve got to be in the front seat of the projects, even though a lot of them developed outside of iwi like kura kaupapa and kohanga a a few things like that," Dr Sharples says.
