Target needed for child poverty
The Child Poverty Action Group is criticising the Government’s refusal to adopt official measures of child poverty or set targets to reduce it.
Spokesperson Nikki Turner says while initiatives such as the Rheumatic Fever Prevention Programme tackle aspects of child poverty, the government lacks a comprehensive strategic approach.
She says cherry picking isolated pieces of the problem is not enough, and government initiatives need to be part of a comprehensive plan, with transparent targets, measurement and monitoring.
Dr Turner, who is also on the Children's Commissioner's Expert Advisory Panel on Child Poverty, says a good starting point will be the commissioner’s annual child poverty monitor which will be released next month.
