Settlement land added to Kainga Whenua scheme

Land returned to iwi and hapu in treaty settlements can now qualify for a scheme aimed at helping Maori to build on their own land.
Tariana Turia, the Associate Minister for Housing, says the changes to Kainga Whenua loans and infrastructure grants allow a wider group of Maori to access housing finance from Kiwibank.
She says other banks may join the scheme.
The Kainga Whenua scheme means houses built on ancestral land no longer need to be re-locatable as long as there is alternative security in case the loan defaults.
Mrs Turia says the changes open the way for urban family members to come together with their whanau who live in rural locations to build homes on their ancestral lands.
